It handles my samplers and drum machines.ĭue to the labor involved in servicing a mixer, it does make sense to buy a new one with new components but the vintage ones have advantages too like being better built in the first place. In the Audio MIDI Setup app on your Mac, choose Window > Show MIDI Studio. Rane boasted of the attention they put into designing this mixer for an ultra low noise spec, including the circuit board layout. 8 stereo channels in one rack unit that is even more shallow than the Mackie.

I have a Rane SM82 that I use as a submixer and it is a real gem. It doesn't quite meet my routing needs anymore unfortunately and I've considered just buying another 1604 VLZ so I can just swap the head rather than spend a whole afternoon disassembling and reassembling the head to deal with one bad channel. I've got several mixers in and out of use including my original 1604 which never had any contact resistance issues after over 20 years of use.

I think it is either a bad contact or cracked solder joint but I'm just living with it for the moment due to the labor involved in taking the head apart. There were still a couple of channels that had noise issues and I did the head a few months later which fixed all but one channel that has a pre that doesn't work until the mixer has been on an hour or so. I cleaned up the body first and that took care of most of its issues which were mostly switches with contact corrosion and some scratchy pre-amp pots. In practice, taking it apart to get to the switch or slider that needs some contact cleaner sprayed on it takes hours. I bought a pretty clean roto podded 1604 VLZ and it required some fairly minor servicing, at least in theory. It's pretty much the nature of the beast. With so many pots, sliders and switches and the extensive use mixers can get, some sort of component failure is almost inevitable. I really like my Mackie VLZ1402 (anyone out there want to buy one?), But it's big brothers take up too much real estate, and I am 'space poor". However, there is no getting away from the facts that the X2222 mixer is pretty transparent, well featured, with a small footprint, and comes in at a price less than that of a half decent effects pedal. Apologies, I thought the submix outputs were balanced too.

That being said, if you got the cash, go for some Mackie VLZ, and if you got more cash, take a look at the Allen & Heath analog mixers.Įdit : Didn't take into account the "no super expensive ", forget Allen & Heath The sound quality is not stellar, but I'd say for the price it's pretty good. Another nice feature are the insert on the 8 mono tracks. I would'nt say there is plenty of aux sends (but I'm mainly making dub, so that's my own point of view ) but there is three (1 pre, 1 pre/post and 1 post), and the cool thing is there is 3 stereo aux returns so you don't need to use tracks for the returns (like on the Mackie VLZ line, this xenyx is more or less a clone of those). The sub and control outputs are unbalanced. Xenyx x2222usb user here, and I can confirm the main outputs are balanced (1/4'' and XLR).
